Hailing from Western Canada, 4 piece groove metal band False Flag have just released their new EP Nest of Vipers. Overall the EP has amazing production and a great mix. Too many times with a band that tunes low as False Flag does, the bass just gets lost, not here, awesome mix.

The opening track "Sacrifice of Solitude" fades into a guttural scream and some unique riffing from lead singer/guitarist Russ Gauthier, while the tight rhythm section pounds away. The overall mid pace and groove sound that this band goes for keeps the chorus breakdowns from going into generic hardcore/metalcore breakdown territory.

The second track "Perfidious" starts with some guitar squeals that I guess give this band its comparisons to Pantera. My favorite part of this song is a bridge midway through where Russ's vocals go clean and my first thoughts were "damn that reminds me of clean parts of Acid Bath". It may not really sound like it, but first thoughts are first thoughts.

"Reversions of Sin" is next and starts off crushing and then moves into some serious groove riffing, really nice stuff that shows Sabbath influence that every metal band with respect to the genre has. The song ends with some great lead work.

Closing out the EP is the title track "Nest of Vipers". After the opening riffs the speed picks up a bit compared to the other tracks and after some of his usual vocal style Russ does a bit more of the cleaning singing, even more melodic than on "Perfidious". The rhythm section on this song is extremely tight. They close out the EP and the song chaotically, although I really could've gone for some more leads over it.

Overall I'll give this EP a 7/10. I really think this band has a lot of potential, getting away from the "generic" low vocals and finding a more unique singing style would be cool, and I think they could utilize their ability to play awesome leads more.
