Norylsk-Catholic Dictatorship

Poland's NORYLSK releases their sophomore album & international debut on Selfmadegod Records -As the power of an anti-Christ compels them to Don its title as "Catholic Dictatorship" point-blank enough? This dead eyed attitude sets the theme for the entire length of this 14 track ear-blaster. Borrowing the unbridled ferocity of bands like Insect Warfare and even primitive vocal type trills from the likes of Brutal Truth and Napalm Death. After three listens to the entire album I no longer felt human. I was brain-washed in a language I've never known. The Good: Classic grind-core that gets your guts boiling. Weird sound bytes in tracks like "The Face of Death" and "Mental Selection" create almost an atmospheric sense, although they break the mold a little bit here, I can see the traditionalists appreciating its bone-breaking blast beats and overall sheer sonic violence this genre created.

The Bad: The guitar player seemed trapped within the confines of his instrumental domain. I can appreciate a dedication to tradition and even the need for all of the simple riffing this type of style can leverage, but there has to be some sort of contrast between the bottom end and the top end, not just a reflection of the rhythm. I did not hear it in most tracks.

The Ugly: Now, being ugly isn't necessarily bad in Grind-core and i'm not talking shit here. But Polish makes for one ugly language especially when barked, gargled and trilled like vocalist "TV" does here. As a matter of point and fact, going forward i think i will only listen to Grind-core if its in some European language. The language alone makes this album worth listening to, NORYLSK sounds especially evil and sickening. At the end of the day my favorite tracks were "Sexual Apartheid," "The Pilgrimage to the Holy Places", "The Face of Death."
