Black Breath Interview By Patrick Wooten with Guitarist Eric

When the evening had started I was not sure when exactly this interview would be conducted. I ended up finishing one interview up just in time to come in and watch Black Breath play on stage, to prevent redundancy please read that review for more details on my thoughts of that, as well as my thoughts about the other bands on the card.

Black Breath's set had just ended, and I did not want to bother Chris right away I figured he needed a breather, so after about 30 minutes or 45 minutes I went towards the fenced in patio area, and met him to see about where to conduct the interview,

The night had fallen, the rain had stopped, though it was still quite humid. Chris himself, he seems to be a laid back guy, though he seemingly takes shit from nobody, a cool dude that I'd gladly buy a beer anytime he's in Music City!

First of all Taste of Khaos  would like to thank you for the opportunity of this interview.

No problem man your welcome.

What first motivated you guys to get together to play music? What first brought this band together? Did you know each other very well before playing music together? Who founded the band originally?

Well I am not an original member, the other two worked at a place together years ago in Bellingham, Wash, started getting together playing shows and that's how it came together.

Patrick- Who decided on the band name being Black Breath, and were there other suggestions before, if so what were some of them?

Not me, but I know it was inspired by something from some sort of literature, or old folklore stuff. I have no clue what the other names were that were considered.

The video for home of the grave, I watched it, loved the video and the song. How many hours and or days would you say it took to shoot that? Do you like shooting music videos or does it seem tedious?  What is your favorite part of that process if you have one? Was that video recorded in an actual hole in the ground or on a set that looked like a grave?

It was actually filmed on a green screen on a closed set, we wanted a very gritty feel to it all. Laughs, we had a bunch of chic;s get all muddy with the belief they were going to do something they didn't end up doing, but they ended up being the fists that punched through the hole three times in the video. I think it took only a couple of hours to film it.. Maybe three?

So how much did the haunted vibe of Salem, Mass itself affect the recording of the new album in that creepy old house you guys rented out? Is it fair to say that your album could end up being some horror/ metal masterpiece because of where it was recorded? I read that the Neil writes most if not all of the lyrics, did recording in Salem in anyway eventually influence the lyrics for the new album?

Its very possible he keeps books of fucked up stuff, all sorts of crazy themes, and writings, even one thing about a serial killer, and something about how this serial killer would kill people so that he could capture and coral their souls in the afterlife. Fucked up shit. That was a very old house across from a graveyard, yeah I'd say that maybe the vibe from that place may have contributed to the album. Anything is possible, well with the history of Salem yeah, laughing ,those tombstones had all sorts of funny looking hats on them as well, they looked like they had been redone to look quite nice. There's a bunch of haunted history with that place anyways, I mean take your pick man, haunted house here, haunted house there.

I've read that you guys have a thing for grave yards and with bringing tape recorders to attempt to catch stuff. What is the craziest thing you've ever caught on a recording? And has anything you've ever caught inspired a song title or lyrics? Do any of you ghost hunt or anything of that nature outside of music for pure interest, if time permits?

Really just crazy nearly inaudible gargling, as far as I know nothing has inspired any lyrics nothing could be really made of those recordings. No none of us do that sort of thing.

So far how are you guys enjoying Nashville Tn and the metal scene here?
Fucking love it!

In your own words what would you say sums up this band and describes it, for those whom may have never heard of you, but are just coming across your name?

Its a fucking kick ass death metal band!

Would you ever consider doing a crazy graveyard ritual during a show to make things interesting or crazy to up the ante, and or for pure theatrical purposes?
That sounds crazy but he'll yeah we'd do it, invite some people out to a grave yard for a show... Laughs. And wed probably even get arrested!

So the new album compared to the previous one, I know you can't talk about much, but were things thrown in at the and added in at the last second like with Sentenced to Life?  Or did everything just fall into place naturally, were things better around this time or worse?
Things went pretty much the same its a long time consuming process, there's always shit here and there that needs to be added in etc, always last minute rushed add ins.

Of all of the countries that you have not been to yet to tour, which country would you most like to tour in next?
Africa.

What do you guys see coming from Black Breath long term? Do you still aim to keep the personal balance between your lives, jobs, and the band, to avoid burn out,  or will you guys eventually become a band that constantly tours world wide, nation wide, records albums every few years, and keeps an everlasting presence within metal? At what point do you quit the day jobs and play music full time? Are you close to that at this point as Black Breath?
Don't over tour, prevent burnout, keep a balance, but there's an unnamed tour we've been offered... That if it works out we may be able to end up quitting our day jobs.. And our gf's might leave us too, laughing hysterically!

Well thank you again very much for letting Taste of Khaos interview you.
No problem man thank you too!
